Weekly Update Sept 19-22

It was great to meet many of you at our Meet the Teacher Night last night! Thank you for stopping by!

Grade 8:

The grade 8s have wrapped up their Integers unit, with a quiz on Thursday. The test was broken down by question level, so there was a Level 2 section, a Level 3 section, and a Level 4 section. The levels correspond to the difficulty level of the questions, and so Level 2 questions would give the student a grade of 2 on our 1-4 grading scheme. Level 3 questions would correspond to a 3 grade, etc. Students had the choice to complete either the Level 2 and Level 3 questions, or the Level 3 and Level 4 questions, based on their perceived understanding of the concepts that would be on the quiz.

We will be going over the quiz as a class next week, once they are all marked. Marks will be put up on PowerSchool early next week.

Next week the grade 8s will begin their next unit, which is about operations with Fractions.

Grade 9:

The grade 9 students are nearing the end of their Rational Numbers unit. Students have been asked to compare rational numbers in their different forms, order rational numbers from least to greatest on a number line, and solve equations involving rational numbers using all four operations, including using the order of operations. We will have a review day on Monday with the class, and then the Rational Numbers test will be on Tuesday. After the test, we will begin a short unit on Square Roots and how they relate to Rational and Irrational Numbers.

Weekly Update: Sept. 12-16

 Grade 8:

This past week the grade 8s started out by working on multiplying integers, both through understanding and using the symbol rules, and by demonstrating the multiplication visually using a number line. They also have practiced dividing integers, and we finished off this week with an Integers Puzzle Activity on Desmos. Next week we'll practice Integer order of operations and Integer word problems. Our Integers Unit Assessment will be on Thursday, Sept. 22.

Grade 9:

The past week the grade 9s have been working with Rational Numbers. We practiced ordering and comparing rationals, and converting between decimals, fractions, and mixed numbers. We began practicing solving rational equations in fraction form, and will introduce equations in decimal form next week. Also next week we will practice order of operation equations and solve word problems. Our Rational Numbers Assessment will likely be early in the week of Sept 26-29.

Weekly Update Sept 6 - 9

Grade 8:
The past week was spent reviewing how to add and subtract integers, and strategies that can be used to support that concept - particularly with the use of/visualizing number lines. Next week the students will begin to learn how to multiply and divide integers.

Grade 9:
The first week of classes was spent on a review of operations with integers, which includes the 4 main operations as well as some order of operations questions. We also reviewed operations with decimals. Next week the students will begin to learn about and discuss rational numbers, starting with comparing and ordering rational numbers and then working up to performing rational number operations.

As always, information about daily work and links to tasks, assignments, videos, or homework can be found on the Checklist in D2L.

Hello Tom Baines students and families! I am excited to start the school year and get to know you! This blog will be where I update you with class happenings. A new blog post will be published each Friday afternoon and will detail what our classes did, and what is coming up.

For more specific information and updates, your child can log onto their D2L Math shell. The D2L shell will contain the class checklist/agenda that will let you know what we are doing in class on a daily basis. Students are responsible for checking the D2L checklist if they miss class.

D2L will be linked with Google Drive. This will allow students to easily share assignments, as well as access any assignment outlines, presentations, class notes, study guides, textbooks, etc that they may need.

There is no parent access to D2L, so you will need to have your child log on with you for access.

I am looking forward to a great year!
